Incompetence
Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?
I am so glad this headline was written by a man. If written by a woman, if would be perceived quite differently. The author writes:
There are three popular explanations for the clear under-representation of women in management, namely: (1) they are not capable; (2) they are not interested; (3) they are both interested and capable but unable to break the glass-ceiling: an invisible career barrier, based on prejudiced stereotypes, that prevents women from accessing the ranks of power.
The reasons for much of this, according to the author, is “our inability to discern between confidence and competence.”
This article was written in 2013. Would it look any different if written today? A quick scan of the news headlines, particularly those coming out of Silicon Valley would leave you with a solid ‘no’ answer.
So nothing has changed? If the author is right, he is talking about human nature, and it’s then no surprise we are still having the same conversations.
Is this a matter of changing behavior or human nature? What happens now?
