MYOB

June 16, 2017

My nana used to tell us kids this all the time. We were curious. We wanted to know what the grown ups were up to.

“Hey! MYOB!” She’d say emphatically and with a smile. Almost always, as I recall, it was followed up with a question. “Do you know what that means?”

And, as I recall, she didn’t usually wait for nor did she care about our answer.

MYOB! Mind your own business!

(Business could be used interchangeably with beeswax, as in “mind your own beeswax!)

That, very non-Stoic thing is what today’s The Daily Stoic brought to my mind. So thank you, daily stoic, for raising a sweet memory of my silly nana.

Here’s the more serious version. I might stick with MYOB.

When Facebook first started, I was 100% this person. My life sucked and other’s were so wonderful. What was I doing wrong Why couldn’t I have all the pretty things and go to all the fantastic places? Then sometime around 2011 or 2012 I just stopped. Michael told me that happiness was a choice and that hit me so hard. I could choose to love the life I had. I could choose to be happy with the choices I’ve made. Choice. Amazing. Now I look at Facebook and see the great things my friends are getting to experience and I’m genuinely happy for them. I no longer envy. I’m choosing to be happy with my life and choosing to appreciate what I do have and the place I do get to go. I also remind myself that someone else is looking at the things I buy and the places I go and they may think my life is perfect, maybe I’m the envied one. It’s all cyclical.

It’s true. Its one of the reasons all the studies show people actually get depressed and anxious from Facebook. It’s wonderful you have someone who reminds you what’s important. Choose happiness! That should be a tshirt!
