Dangerous assumptions
When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me.
People generally tend to make a lot of assumptions about women. That’s not to say the same isn’t true about men, but that’s not my story to tell.
In her book, “This is the Story of a Happy Marriage,” Ann Patchett writes about when she had gotten a dog. She treated this dog like it was a pot of gold. She babied it and brought it everywhere. Friends, family and strangers alike saw her behavior and assumed she wanted a baby. She was certain she didn’t.
She knew the problem was everyone else’s, not hers. And so she was able to ignore the noise, knowing it was wrong.
There is danger in putting our assumptions on others. It propagates stereotypes that create and support some cultural beliefs that are better left in the past.
Let’s stop assuming a woman always want a baby. Sometimes, all she wants is a dog.
