Are you helping because you sincerely want to help or because you want to get something out of it?
Yes, it can be tit for tat, provided you are honest about your motivation. Don’t make yourself out to be hero if your help is only motivated by self interest.
Are you being honest with yourself and me?

I guess my question is: does it matter? Sure, help motivated by altruism might be more noble. But if one needs help and another is willing to assist, does it matter what their motivation is?

It does if it impacts the results in a way that’s better for the helper and not the helpee.
