Nowhere to hide

May 1, 2017

Video calls leave you nowhere to hide. They often bring out the introvert in me.

I suggest them to other people. It creates rapport. Eye contact creates valuable connections. Create a watercooler effect with people all over the world. It will be so great.

Yet, I am hesitant to do them myself. I’m having a bad hair day. I look old. Where did this second chin come from? Ugh, I don’t want to see anyone today. I’ll have to put on a clean shirt. At least I can still wear my sweatpants.

There’s nowhere to hide. And that’s why they are so valuable.

No one ever wants to do a video conference and I’m mostly okay with that. The only real issue is that I have never met a single one of my new team…. It’d be nice to have a meeting where we all actually look at one another. Maybe I should suggest it.

Thanks for commenting @brandybran49. You should. It creates a different dynamic, especially for remote workers. It could improve communication going forward, and you don’t have to do it every time. The good news is they will only see the top part of you. You can still wear pajama bottoms! I did an interview once in a suit jacked with some makeup and good hair and sweatpants. Shhhh

I like video chats. It creates a closeness not achieved in calls. It also allows body language to be a part of the conversation, and when study after study says it is the largest part of our communication, it is an important piece to have sometimes.
