Late bloomer

November 16, 2011

I’m a 39-year-old first time mom. That’s right. You heard me.

It’s not so unusual these days, but a younger me never dreamed I’d wait so long to become a mother.

Of course, it wasn’t all choice. Nature, Mother Earth and biology all stood in my way for the past two years. But I wasn’t young when we started trying.

Now that I’m in the midst of all that new motherhood brings with a 2-month old, all I can say is wow. I never anticipated the dramatic intensity of this process. Wow.

On many levels, with what I now know, I am so happy I waited. How do young mothers without exceptional mental fortitude survive and have children that thrive?

On the flip side, as an older new mom, it can be challenge to adapt my ways that I’ve had years to firmly establish. I’ve come to value my ME time more and more over the years and now it’s gone.

It took me a while to meet my prince charming. We wanted to enjoy one another for a while before becoming three. and then there were concerns about money. About insurance. And then nature took it out of our hands. Later, we got our sweet boy.

An older and wiser me has a tremendous appreciation for the work and dedication it took to get my little raspberry here. My capacity to love another like this may be greater than it would have been 10 years ago. I’ll never know.

I’m doing my best to appreciate where we are now – with all of its trials and tribulations. My sweet thing came to us at the best time for him.
